Description

At the Archaeological Museum of the Territory of Populonia, you can discover the fascinating history of the city of Populonia, an ancient city-state whose earliest constructions date back to the Paleolithic period. It flourished during the height of Etruscan civilization and later during the Roman era.

The museum is located on 3 floors of the Palazzo Nuovo in Piombino and includes over 2000 artifacts from the prehistoric, Etruscan, and Roman periods. Visitors can admire incredible finds such as the Ancient amphora of Baratti, a masterpiece in silver found on the seabed among the remains of a shipwrecked vessel millennia ago. The amphora later became the symbol of the Val di Cornia. The museum features multimedia pathways with videos and music, as well as immersive environmental and landscape reconstructions in real scale. The museum’s address is Piazza Cittadella, 8, in Piombino (LI).
